First, many professional journals potentially include marital therapy in their scope, but it is not clear which of these journals most often publish articles on marital therapy. Second, many authors and institutions contribute articles on marital therapy to professional journals. Those interested in studying marital therapy would benefit from identifying the most prolific authors and institutions in the field of marital therapy. Third, identifying recent trends in the research and practice of marital therapy would yield important information regarding the particular problems and issues with which the field is concerned.The present article responds to these needs by analyzing marital therapy anicles in 10 prominent marital and family therapy journals. This updates previous analyses of scholarship in the field (i. e., Olson, Russell, Sprenkle, 1980; Thomas McKenzie, 1986), but with a focus on marital therapy.We reviewed all articles published in 10 selected marital and family therapy journals during a 6-year period from January 1985 through September 1991. Ten journals were identified as among the most influential in the field of marital and family therapy: the American Journal of Family Therapy, Behavior Therapy, Cognitive Therapy and Research, Family Process, Family Therapy, The International Journal of Family Therapy, Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology, Journal of Family Therapy, Journal of Marital and Family Therapy, and Psychotherapy. All journals were published continuously during the time period covered, although the International Journal of Family Therapy was renamed Contemporary Family Therapy: An International Journal in the Spring of 1986.Editorials, book reviews, and letters to the editor were excluded from review. The sample consisted of 3,100 articles that were subject to peer review. Article title and abstract content determined which articles were selected as pertaining to marital therapy. Ultimately, 176 articles (5.7% of all articles) were identified as dealing with marital therapy.

Under a smokescreen of the usual abuse of immigration critics, the June 20 BusinessWeek has conceded that there are indeed major problems with post-1965 immigrants welfare-participation rates and skin levels. And it attempts to establish a new defensive line: These problems are concentrated among refugees and illegal immigrants; legal immigrants are still okay. This is a highly significant development. BusinessWeek and its immigration writer Michael J. Mandel have been relentless drum-beaters for immigration. Mr. Mandels July 13, 1992, cover story, “The Immigrants: How Theyre Helping the U.S. Economy,” stands as a museum piece of pro-immigration cliches. Of course, the problems Mr. Mandel has discovered now were also perfectly obvious then. But at that time he glossed over them, saying that overall immigrant welfare participation was “only” about 10 per cent higher than among the native-born. Evidence that the more recent immigrants were sharply more welfare-prone was simply suppressed. Now, however, since refugees and illegal immigrants constitute up to a third of the total influx every year, even Mr. Mandel has been forced into a decisive, if tacit, admission: that the chaotic system of laws, regulations, and enforcement practices laughingly known as U.S. immigration “policy” is broke. And must be fixed. It is quite true that, because refugees are immediately eligible for welfare, they tend to stay on it. This produces startlingly high welfare-participation rates even among groups widely celebrated as successful, entrepreneurial, potentially Republican voters, etc., such as Cubans (16.0 per cent) and ex-Soviets (16.3 per cent). It is also probably the case that illegal immigrants are less skilled on average, and thus more likely to become economic casualties. They are obviously getting welfare quickly too, if only through their American-born children, citizens by virtue of the Fourteenth Amendment. But it is not true that, if you subtract refugees and illegals, immigrants present no problems. Indeed, BusinessWeeks own statistics show that “nonrefugee immigrants” have an average welfare-participation rate of 7.8 per cent, compared to a native-born rate of 7.4 per cent. And the rate among native-born American whites is dramatically lower, perhaps only 5 per cent.)

Abstract The paper examines work regarding adolescent self-esteem, self-efficacy, perceived control, self-determination and self-regulation, and argues for their importance in constructing adolescent distributed learning environments. These interrelated factors are considered critical in adolescent development; therefore, they require support for student success. The paper applies the concepts of self-determination and its value as derived from studies of adolescents with learning disabilities. The author also examines and applies study findings implicating that failure and other deviant behaviors are motivated by self-esteem considerations. The paper concludes with recommendations for fostering self-directed adolescent learners in distributed learning environments. While the human condition may be universal, special considerations may be given to the condition of students entering particular phases of development. During the period of adolescence, a student enters the phase where he or she is making strides toward adulthood. The concepts of self-direction, self-determination, or self-regulation are central to the achievement of adult status in western societies. This development is greatly affected by a students level of self-esteem, self-efficacy, perceived control, and actual autonomy. The relationship between these factors is dynamic rather than static. The learning environment and interactions with it have been shown to contribute significantly to this phase of student development, especially for adolescents. Ultimately, it is in the distributed learning environment where an adolescent will experience the greatest pressure for the development and attainment of self-direction. An adolescent student in such an environment experiences a much higher level of autonomy than afforded in a “traditional” classroom, but will only be effective if he or she can manage it.
